A Ground Source Heat Pump System for a Primary School in Bushey, Watford

Better Planet was selected to design, supply, install and commission a ground source heat pump system for Little Reddings Primary School in Bushey, Watford. The system is now up and running and it is providing heating and cooling for a new school building commissioned by the Department of Education.

In the winter, the system is providing space heating distributed with fan coil units and radiators. In the summer, the system is providing passive cooling. This type of cooling is based on the fact that the heat transfer liquid in the ground collector (boreholes in this case) is colder than the air in the summer.  This heat transfer liquid is heat-exchanged against the heat transfer liquid in the heating distribution system. The running cost for this type of cooling is very limited as the heat pump compressors are not running, just a circulation pump. An added benefit is that heat is moved from inside the building to the ground collector in the summer, which makes the system more efficient when the heating season starts.

Project Summary

  • Two Nibe F1345-60 kW ground source heat pumps
  • 12 boreholes
  • A ground manifold
  • Connecting trenching and pipework
  • A 1,000 litre buffer tank
  • Pressurisation unit, magnetic filters and a dosing pot
