Updated planning regulations for air source heat pumps

Department for Net Zero have updated planning requirements for air source heat pumps

The Department for Net Zero have announced a relaxtion of planning restrictions relating to air source heat pump installations

The government today announced that the permitted development rights for air source heat pumps will change early 2025 to:

  • – Remove the 1m boundary rule, enabling heat pumps to be installed within 1m of the property boundary.
  • – Increase the size limit of the heat pump for dwellinghouses from 0.6m³ to 1.5m³.
  • Double the number of heat pumps permitted, from one to two for detached dwellinghouses

The permitted development right will continue to require that installations are compliant with the relevant Microgeneration Certification Scheme Planning Standards.

“We welcome these changes as the current planning rules makes it difficult and sometimes impossible to install air source heat pumps”
