Air Source Heat Pump in Hemel Hempstead

Better Planet was selected for this project to provide an efficient, eco-friendly heating solution for an existing residential property in Hemel Hempstead. This case study highlights how a high-quality air source heat pump installation can meet the heating and hot water demands of an existing property while reducing carbon emissions and energy costs.

Project Scope: Design, supply, installation, and commissioning of an air source heat pump system

Solution Components:

Challenges

The installation of heat pumps in existing properties presents unique challenges, especially when the property is transitioning from an outdated heating system. For this project, the challenges included:

  • Decommissioning the existing System: The old heating system required safe decommissioning, including disconnecting and removing the old tank and piping.
  • Space and layout constraints: The outdoor heat pump unit needed to be placed at a distance that complies with planning regulations, ensuring it is at least one meter from the property boundary.
  • System integration: Connecting the new heat pump to the existing plumbing infrastructure while minimising disruption to the homeowner’s daily life.

Solution

Our in-house team designed and implemented a system using the NIBE 2050-10kW air source heat pump. This model is well-suited to UK climates and provides efficient heating even in colder conditions. The solution also included a 300L Megacoil water cylinder to ensure ample hot water supply and a 100L buffer tank to regulate temperature and maintain system efficiency.

Key Aspects of the Installation:

  1. Design and Planning: We undertook site visits to complete a heat loss assessment, ad considered kit placement. This ensured compliance with permitted development guidelines.
  2. Installation and Commissioning: Our engineers carried out the installation, including the removal and disposal of the old system. The outside unit was placed in a location that ensured compliance with noise and boundary regulations, while the water cylinder and buffer tank were integrated into the property’s utility area.
  3. System Optimisation: The buffer tank was included to ensure consistent performance, as it helps to store excess energy, reducing the need for the heat pump to turn on and off frequently. This enhances the longevity and efficiency of the system, ensuring optimal heating and hot water provision year-round.

Outcomes

With the installation of the NIBE 2050-10kW heat pump system, the Hemel Hempstead property now benefits from:

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: By switching from a traditional heating system to a renewable air source heat pump, the property has reduced its carbon emissions, supporting both the homeowner’s and government’s sustainability goals.
  • Lower Energy Costs: The high efficiency of the NIBE 2050 air source heat pump, combined with the 300L water cylinder and buffer tank, allows the homeowner to enjoy consistent heating with reduced energy consumption, lowering monthly bills.
